ધીમે ધીમે રાત જામી રહી હતી. ઘનઘોર શિવધાર જંગલમાં અંધકાર પગ પસારો કરી રહ્યો હતો. ધુવડનો ભયંકર અવાજ જાણે સંકેત આપી રહ્યો હતો કે આ મારો વિસ્તાર છે. આવા સમયે, એક બળદગાડી ધીરે ધીરે આગળ વધી રહી હતી. નંદલાલ, એક ધર્મપુર ગામનો સમૃદ્ધ વેપારી, પોતાના માલસામાન અને પાંચ વર્ષના બાળક કિશનને લઈને ગઢ શિવાંજલિ તરફ જઈ રહ્યો હતો. આ રસ્તો તેના ધંધાની મુખ્ય ધમની હતો, પણ ડાકુઓના ડરથી બધા લોકો તેને ટાળતા હતા. બળદોએ ઘણી મુશ્કેલીથી ચઢાણવાળો રસ્તો પસાર કર્યો. જેમ ગાડી સપાટી પર આવી, ત્યાં જ રસ્તામાં પથ્થર અને ઝાડી-ઝાંખરા પડ્યાં હતાં, જેનાથી રસ્તો બંધ હતો.
